Uhuru's Jubilee Revival and the Mt. Kenya Vote: Who Controls the Bloc in 2027?

For the first time in a decade, Mt. Kenya has no clear political home. Ruto, Gachagua, and Uhuru are all competing for the bloc. Whoever wins it wins the presidency.

For the first time in a decade, Mt. Kenya — Kenya's largest voting bloc — has no clear political home. President Ruto is the incumbent but faces a rebellion from his former deputy Gachagua. Former President Uhuru Kenyatta is reviving Jubilee and backing Fred Matiang'i. And the region's voters, who delivered 90%+ margins in 2013 and 2017 for the Jubilee ticket, are now being courted by at least three competing camps. Whoever wins Mt. Kenya in 2027 almost certainly wins the presidency.

The Mt. Kenya region — comprising Kiambu, Murang'a, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Meru, Tharaka-Nithi, and Embu counties — has approximately 5.2 million registered voters. This is roughly 24% of Kenya's total electorate. In every election since 2013, the Mt. Kenya bloc vote has been the single largest determinant of the presidential outcome.

How Mt. Kenya Voted: 2013-2022

ElectionMt. Kenya's CandidateMt. Kenya Vote ShareResult
2013Uhuru Kenyatta (Jubilee)~95% for UhuruWon (50.07%)
2017Uhuru Kenyatta (Jubilee)~95% for UhuruWon (54.27%)
2022William Ruto (UDA/Kenya Kwanza)~80% for RutoWon (50.49%)

The pattern is unmistakable. When Mt. Kenya votes as a bloc (95%+), the candidate wins comfortably. When the bloc fractures even slightly (80% for Ruto in 2022), the margin narrows to near-fatal levels. A three-way split in 2027 would be unprecedented — and potentially decisive.

The Three Competitors for Mt. Kenya

1. President Ruto and UDA

Ruto won Mt. Kenya in 2022 through an alliance with Gachagua and a "bottom-up economics" message that resonated with small traders, farmers, and the economically frustrated. But his support base has eroded:

  • Gachagua's impeachment in October 2024 alienated a significant portion of the region
  • The Finance Bill controversies (2024 and 2026) have hit Mt. Kenya's trading communities hard
  • The cost of living crisis has undermined the "hustler" economic narrative

2. Rigathi Gachagua and DCP

Gachagua launched the Democracy for Citizens Party specifically to challenge Ruto from within Mt. Kenya. His pitch is ethnic solidarity — arguing that the region's interests are not being served by the Ruto administration. He has intensified consultations with opposition leaders, including hosting businessman Jimi Wanjigi at his Wamunyoro residence.

In June 2026, Gachagua announced a 45-day political sabbatical at his Wamunyoro home in Mathira, Nyeri County — withdrawing from public rallies to focus exclusively on unifying the opposition behind a single 2027 presidential candidate. A 16-member caucus comprising elders, professionals, clergy, youth leaders, and political advisers has been meeting during the retreat, having concluded that the opposition's mobilisation phase is largely complete and the next stage involves candidate selection negotiations.

Gachagua's advantage is personal networks. He was the region's chief campaigner in 2022 and retains relationships with ward-level operatives, church leaders, and business communities across Central Kenya.

3. Uhuru Kenyatta and Jubilee

The former president has announced Jubilee will field candidates in all elective positions in 2027. Under his direction, the party has reopened regional offices, held grassroots mobilisation meetings, and re-energised county-level networks. Jubilee has endorsed Fred Matiang'i as its presidential candidate.

Uhuru's strategy is indirect. He cannot run again (two-term limit), but he retains significant influence through:

  • The Kenyatta family's business and media empire
  • Personal relationships with Mt. Kenya's political and business elite
  • The Jubilee party infrastructure, which still exists in every constituency

The question is whether Uhuru's endorsement of Matiang'i — a non-Kikuyu Gusii candidate — can translate into Mt. Kenya votes. Historically, the region has supported its own: Kibaki (Nyeri), Uhuru (Kiambu), Ruto-with-Gachagua (2022). Asking Mt. Kenya to vote for a Gusii candidate would be a significant departure.

The Split Scenarios

If Mt. Kenya's approximately 5.2 million registered voters turn out at 70% (3.64 million votes), here are three possible scenarios:

Scenario A — Ruto holds: Ruto retains 65% of Mt. Kenya (~2.37M votes), Gachagua takes 25% (~910K), Matiang'i/others take 10% (~364K). Ruto wins the region but with a dramatically reduced margin compared to 2022.

Scenario B — Gachagua wins: Gachagua takes 50% (~1.82M), Ruto takes 35% (~1.27M), Matiang'i/others take 15% (~546K). Gachagua becomes the Mt. Kenya kingmaker but needs strong alliances elsewhere to reach 50%+1 nationally.

Scenario C — Three-way split: Ruto 40% (~1.46M), Gachagua 35% (~1.27M), Matiang'i 25% (~910K). No one wins a decisive Mt. Kenya mandate, and the presidency is decided by turnout and margins in other regions — a scenario Kenya has never experienced.

The Ol Kalou By-Election Test: July 16, 2026

The Ol Kalou constituency by-election on July 16, 2026 — triggered by the death of MP David Kiaraho in March — has become the most watched political contest in Kenya right now. Nine candidates are cleared, but the race is widely seen as a direct DCP vs UDA showdown for Mt. Kenya supremacy. Whatever the result, it will be read as a verdict on who controls the region heading into 2027.

The by-election has drawn in all the major players. Murang'a Governor Irungu Kangata has brought the ODM-affiliated Linda Mwananchi movement into the Mt. Kenya campaign trail, with rallies planned at Kanjuri Church, Ngorika, Ol Kalou Town, and Nyahururu in the final days before voting. Kangata's involvement signals that even pro-government Mt. Kenya politicians are hedging their positions — testing whether the Linda Mwananchi brand can gain traction in a region that has historically rejected ODM.

For campaign teams tracking 2027, the Ol Kalou turnout rate, party vote shares, and margin of victory will be the closest thing to a live preview of the three-way Mt. Kenya contest.

What Campaign Teams Should Track

  • Ward-level voter registration changes — are new voters registering with UDA, DCP, or Jubilee?
  • Church and community leader endorsements — Mt. Kenya's dense religious network is a key influence channel
  • Business community sentiment — matatu operators, traders, and farmers who backed Ruto's "hustler" message in 2022
  • Gachagua's legal status — the impeachment court ruling and any appeals could affect his eligibility
  • Uhuru's rally attendance — crowd sizes at Jubilee events in Kiambu, Murang'a, and Nyeri

Mt. Kenya has been a monolithic voting bloc for three consecutive elections. If it fragments in 2027, every prediction model built on historical patterns breaks. The region is the single most important variable in Kenyan electoral politics — and right now, nobody controls it.
