We've spent years building Kenya's most comprehensive election data platform. Now we're sharing what we've found.
Here is a confession: we are election data nerds. The team behind Votrack has spent years collecting, cleaning, and analyzing Kenya's election data going back to 2007. We have built dashboards, crunched numbers, and stared at spreadsheets until the numbers started telling stories.
And those stories? They are fascinating.
Today, we are launching the Votrack Election Data Blog. It is our way of sharing what we have learned with you — candidates, campaign managers, political analysts, journalists, and every Kenyan who cares about how democracy actually works on the ground.
Why We Built This
Kenya has held four general elections since the 2010 constitution: in 2013, 2017 (twice, actually), and 2022. Each one generated massive amounts of data. Presidential results. Governor races. Senate counts. MP tallies. MCA battles. Women Representative contests. All happening simultaneously across 47 counties and over 46,000 polling stations.
But here is the problem: most of that data sits in PDF reports that nobody reads. It gets mentioned once on election night, then disappears. Nobody goes back to ask the important questions: What patterns are emerging? Which counties are swinging? Where do elections get decided?
We do. And now you can too.
What the Numbers Look Like
Let us give you a taste of the scale we are working with.
In the 2022 presidential election alone, William Ruto won with 7,176,141 votes (50.49%) against Raila Odinga's 6,942,930 votes (48.85%). The margin? Just 233,211 votes out of over 14 million cast. That is 1.64 percentage points. In a country of 47 counties and 46,229 polling stations, that margin works out to roughly 5 votes per station.
Think about that. Five votes per polling station was the difference between President Ruto and President Odinga.
And it has been getting tighter. In 2013, Kenyatta's margin over Odinga was about 800,000 votes. In 2017, it was 1.4 million. Then in 2022, the same matchup (different candidate, same coalition dynamics) came down to 233,000. The trend is clear: Kenyan elections are becoming razor-thin contests where every vote, every station, and every county matters.
What You Will Find Here
Over the coming months, we will publish deep dives into every aspect of Kenya's election data. Here is what to expect:
Election Results Analysis. County-by-county breakdowns of every presidential, gubernatorial, senatorial, and parliamentary race from 2013 through 2022. We are not just giving you the numbers — we are showing you the patterns.
Voter Data Insights. Registration trends, turnout patterns, demographic breakdowns. Where are the youth voters? Which counties have the highest registration rates? Where does turnout drop off — and why?
Technology Deep Dives. How does biometric voter verification actually work? What happened with the KIEMS kits? Why did 3,032 polling stations have no internet coverage in 2017 — and how does that affect results transmission?
Platform Guides. Practical guides on how to use Votrack for parallel vote tallying, agent management, and real-time election monitoring. Whether you are a presidential campaign or a first-time MCA candidate, we will show you how to track your election.
2027 Previews. Because the next election is already shaping up. With major political realignments underway, the 2027 election could be the most unpredictable in Kenya's history. We will help you read the data before anyone else.
The Bigger Picture: Why Election Data Matters
Election petitions have exploded in Kenya. In 2007, just 36 petitions were filed. By 2013, that number jumped to 188. In 2017, it hit 446 petitions. That is a 12-fold increase in a decade. The Kenya Law courts have been flooded with disputes over results.
Why? Because when margins are thin and data is opaque, disputes are inevitable. The solution is not fewer elections or more courts. The solution is better data. Transparent data. Real-time data. Data that every party and every candidate can verify independently.
That is exactly what Votrack provides. And that is exactly what this blog will demonstrate, post by post, chart by chart, county by county.
Looking Ahead to 2027
The 2027 general election is less than two years away. The political landscape has shifted dramatically. The passing of Raila Odinga in October 2025 has left Nyanza in uncharted political territory for the first time in decades. The impeachment of Deputy President Gachagua in October 2024 has fractured Mt. Kenya's political unity. Traditional voting blocs are no longer guaranteed.
For candidates preparing for 2027, the old playbook will not work. You cannot just rely on your ethnic base and hope the coalition math adds up. You need data. You need to know exactly where your votes are, where your opponent's votes are, and where the swing voters live. You need parallel vote tallying on election day to protect your results from the polling station all the way to the national tally.
Votrack gives you all of that. Our platform covers all 46,229 polling stations across 47 counties. Your agents can report results via web dashboard, USSD (works even on 2G networks), or Telegram bot. You get real-time county-by-county totals as soon as your agents submit.
But you do not have to take our word for it. Read the blog. See the data. Draw your own conclusions. And when you are ready to protect your votes in 2027, request a demo.
