Nyeri gave Ruto 83.37%. Kirinyaga gave him 84.70%. These are Gachagua's home counties. After his impeachment in 2024, the question is whether Mt. Kenya's vote stays put in 2027.

The heart of Mt. Kenya politics beats in two counties. Nyeri, the county of the Mau Mau rebellion and Kenya's independence movement, gave William Ruto 272,507 votes (83.37%) against Raila Odinga's 52,052 (15.92%) in 2022. Kirinyaga, the county of the sacred mountain itself, went even further with 220,984 for Ruto (84.70%) and just 37,909 for Odinga (14.53%).

These were not just numbers. They were a political statement. In 2017, this same region had given Uhuru Kenyatta even higher margins. Nyeri went 98.4% for Kenyatta. Kirinyaga went 98.6%. But by 2022, the Kikuyu community had transferred its allegiance from Kenyatta to Ruto, and the margins, while still commanding, had dropped by roughly 14 to 15 percentage points.

The key figure in this transfer was Rigathi Gachagua, Ruto's running mate and the man who was supposed to be Mt. Kenya's voice in government. Gachagua hails from Mathira constituency in Nyeri County. His selection as deputy president was meant to lock in the Mt. Kenya vote for the Kenya Kwanza coalition. It worked in 2022. The question is whether it still works after his impeachment in October 2024.

The 2022 Results in Detail

Looking at the raw numbers, both counties were decisive for Ruto. Nyeri had 482,000 registered voters and achieved a turnout of 68.29%, producing 326,880 valid votes. Kirinyaga had 376,137 registered voters at 69.85% turnout, yielding 260,900 valid votes.

Combined, these two counties delivered 493,491 votes for Ruto against 89,961 for Odinga. The net contribution to Ruto's national margin from just these two counties was over 400,000 votes, nearly double the 233,211-vote national margin. If Nyeri and Kirinyaga had voted like Nairobi (57% Odinga), Ruto would have lost the election.

The rejected ballots were relatively low. Nyeri had 2,271 rejected ballots and Kirinyaga 1,823. For a combined voter base of 858,137, this represents less than 0.5% rejection rate, indicating well-managed polling stations and adequate voter education in the region.

Historical Comparison: Kenyatta 2013/2017 vs Ruto 2022

The historical trend reveals a nuanced story. In 2017, Kenyatta won Nyeri with 389,410 votes (98.35%) and Kirinyaga with 297,652 (98.61%). The opposition barely registered, with Odinga getting just 4,735 in Nyeri and 3,120 in Kirinyaga. These were among the most lopsided county results in any democratic election anywhere in the world.

By 2022, Ruto's percentages dropped to 83.37% in Nyeri and 84.70% in Kirinyaga. That is still overwhelming. But the drop of about 15 percentage points represents a meaningful shift. Odinga's Nyeri vote increased from 4,735 to 52,052 (an elevenfold increase). In Kirinyaga, it went from 3,120 to 37,909 (a twelvefold increase).

Several factors explain this shift. First, Kenyatta's ethnic appeal as a fellow Kikuyu was more powerful than Ruto's appeal as an adopted ally. Second, Odinga's partnership with Kenyatta through the 2018 handshake created a permission structure for some Kikuyu voters to consider the Azimio coalition. Third, younger voters in both counties were less bound by the tribal voting patterns of their parents.

What the IEBC's registration data shows is that these counties also grew. Nyeri's register increased from 457,197 in 2017 to 482,000 in 2022. Kirinyaga went from 349,970 to 376,137. The growth came predominantly from young voters entering the register for the first time, many of whom may not share their parents' political convictions.

Mt. Kenya is not monolithic. The shift from 98% to 83% shows real voter mobility. Votrack tracks polling-station-level results that reveal which wards are shifting and which are holding firm. Request a demo to see the granular data.

Post-Impeachment: The 2027 Question

Rigathi Gachagua's impeachment in October 2024 changed the political calculus for Mt. Kenya. Gachagua was the bridge between Ruto and the Kikuyu voter base. He spoke in terms of "one man, one vote, one shilling" and positioned himself as Mt. Kenya's protector in government. His removal created a vacuum.

The chart above models three scenarios for Nyeri and Kirinyaga in 2027:

  • Status quo (Ruto holds ~80%): If Mt. Kenya voters remain loyal to Kenya Kwanza despite Gachagua's removal, the margins stay similar to 2022.
  • Moderate shift (Ruto drops to ~65%): If Gachagua-aligned voters either stay home or shift to an opposition candidate, Ruto's share could drop 15-18 points.
  • Major realignment (below 50%): If Mt. Kenya produces its own presidential candidate or overwhelmingly backs an opposition figure, the entire electoral map changes.

The implications are enormous. In 2022, Mt. Kenya's six core counties (Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang'a, Kiambu, Nyandarua, Embu) delivered a net advantage of roughly 1.5 million votes for Ruto. If that advantage halved, Ruto's 233,211-vote national margin would evaporate.

Political commentators in the Standard have noted that Gachagua's allies have been organising at the ward level in both Nyeri and Kirinyaga, building a grassroots network that could either be deployed for a new alliance or held as leverage against Ruto. The outcome of this political chess game will likely determine 2027.

According to Kenya Law records, the Gachagua impeachment proceedings at the Senate in October 2024 centred on allegations of corruption and ethnic divisiveness. The outcome has created unprecedented uncertainty in a region that has voted as a bloc for the past three election cycles.
